Santa Teresa Pool - The Real Facts

THE REAL FACTS ON THE SANTA TERESA POOL

Acting CEO for the MacDonnell Shire, Diane Hood, provides the following facts.

“The MacDonnell Shire Council inherited a pool that was almost 40 years old.

The current pool has subsided and has cracks and damaged pipes.

McDonnell Shire Council has no funds for pool maintenance and management. The MacDonnell Shire Council is looking at how it may get external funding through Government, and /or other sources.

Shire representatives are examining what repairs are needed for the Santa Teresa Pool and getting quotes on fixing the pool.

While the Shire agrees that swimming pools in Aboriginal communities provide health and social benefits, not all indigenous communities have pools. There are only three that have been built in MacDonnell Shire.

The pools are not heated and are not open in winter, they generally re-open mid Spring. Depending on the extent of repairs needed to the Santa Teresa pool and whether funding can be found, the Shire will endeavour to re-open the pool before the summer months.”
