Amoonguna
Location
The community of Amoonguna is located 15 km south of Alice Springs on the Ross Highway. All roads within the community and access to and from the community are sealed. During heavy and consistent rainfall, if the Todd River flows the community may be cut off for a short time.
History
The community of Amoonguna was established in 1963 to provide accommodation for Aboriginal people who lived in and around the Alice Springs district. Most people living in the community are Eastern Arrernte who either were or are descendants of family who moved from the Old Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the community when it was first developed.
Population
The average population is 200 to 250 residents depending on season, funerals, cultural events, sporting events and ceremony.
Access
With Amoonguna's close proximity to Alice Springs and all roads being sealed, transport does not constitute a difficulty as it does in remote communities. The use of a taxi if necessary is not out of the question. The community is also located within a few kilometres of the Alice Springs airport.
MacDonnell Shire Council Services
The MacDonnell Shire Council provides municipal services to Amoonguna including Centrelink service through an agency in the Council office, aged care, night patrol service, maintenance of internal roads, development and maintenance of parks and gardens, mechanical repairs, animal control, construction and maintenance of firebreaks, garbage collection and construction and maintenance of rubbish tips.
Council Infrastructure
The following Council infrastructure exists within the Amoonguna community:
A Council office with associated IT and Communications equipment, mechanical workshop, aged care building and a sport and recreation hall.
Other infrastructure and community life
The community is connected to the Alice Springs electricity network and the Alice Springs town water supply.
The sewerage system in Amoonguna is owned and operated by the PowerWater Corporation. Council is contracted to keep the pond area tidy with whipper snipping, slashing and mowing.
There is also a Health Clinic, Primary School, General Store and the Amoonguna Arts Centre.
