The community of Amoonguna is located 15 km south of Alice Springs on the Ross Highway. All roads within the community and access to and from the community are sealed. During heavy and consistent rainfall, if the Todd River flows the community may be cut off for a short time.
The community of Amoonguna was established in 1963 to provide accommodation for Aboriginal people who lived in and around the Alice Springs district. Most people living in the community are Eastern Arrernte who either were or are descendants of family who moved from the Old Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the community when it was first developed.
The average population is 200 to 250 residents depending on season, funerals, cultural events, sporting events and ceremony.
With Amoonguna's close proximity to Alice Springs and all roads being sealed, transport does not constitute a difficulty as it does in remote communities. The use of a taxi if necessary is not out of the question. The community is also located within a few kilometres of the Alice Springs airport.
