Roads and Traffic Management
Roads
The Council is responsible for over 1,700 of local roads within the Shire which covers mainly access and outstations roads. Of the 1,700km about 4% of this is sealed and the rest is made up of gravel..
The includes roads within remote communties and roads connecting those communities to major highways, with one another and with outstations.
This year the Council will develop an asset management plan for the road network that will include prioritising of traffic volumes and composition. This will be in preparation for the National Heavy vehicle legislation changes that will be rolled out nationally in 2012.
Our major Achievements for 2010/2011 have included upgrading of Utju / Areyonga, Wallace Rockhole, and Ikuntji / Haasts Bluff access roads. This work involved has included; resheeting, major road lifts and drainage systems. After the wettest year on record we completed National Disaster Relief Repair Association repair work to Wallace Rockhole, Utju / Areyonga, Apatula / Finke and Tapatjatjaka / Titjikala.
Traffic Management
The role of the Civil Works team is to manage the local area traffic management within our 13 communities. This involves installation and maintenance of speedbumps, roundabouts, bollards, street lighting to address any shortcutting and safety concerns.
Our major achievements across traffic management have included a joint venture project with Northern Territory Government at Ltyentye Apurte / Santa Teresa. An upgrade at Walungurru / Kintore has been designed for a 5 lane approach rubber roundabout which will be installed prior to the 30 year celebration in October 2011.
