MacDonnell Regional Council (MRC) is proud to celebrate the national recognition received by Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) at the 2026 Keep Australia Beautiful Australian Tidy Towns Sustainability Awards, held in Launceston over the weekend.
Following Ikuntji’s success at the 2025 Territory Tidy Towns Awards in Darwin, Council and community staff travelled to Tasmania to represent the Northern Territory on the national stage.
Ikuntji received the following honours at the national awards: • Winner – Litter Prevention Award: Beautification for Now and Tomorrow • Joint Winner – Dame Phyllis Frost Local Hero Award: Douglas Multa • Highly Commended – Overall National Tidy Towns Award
These awards recognise the strength of local leadership, cultural knowledge and community-driven sustainability initiatives taking place in Ikuntji. The community continues to lead innovative approaches in waste management, water conservation, litter prevention, youth engagement and environmental care.
A special congratulations is extended to Douglas Multa, whose leadership and cultural guidance continue to strengthen community pride, protect sacred sites and ensure future generations remain connected to Country. His recognition through the Dame Phyllis Frost Local Hero Award is well deserved.
We are immensely proud to see Ikuntji acknowledged at a national level. These achievements reflect the dedication, innovation and hard work of our staff and community members, and we remain committed to delivering sustainable outcomes that benefit all residents across the MacDonnell Region.
